💎CORE ARGUMENT

Money can be lost and earned back. So can strength, and a reputation, and a subscriber count. An hour is spent once and no later effort recovers it. It is the only thing I own that works like this, and the thing I account for least.

Seneca makes the comparison with money on purpose. People who would not hand a stranger a coin will hand over an afternoon without noticing. He suggests keeping a ledger: what came in, what went out, what was taken, and what simply leaked.

I keep that ledger for euros. Every Sunday I spend ten minutes putting the week's spending into categories, and I can say to within twenty euros where March went. I have no such record of the hours, and when I try to reconstruct one it comes out mostly blank. During the flat weeks of July I wrote that I had worked all day and could not say on what. That is a missing entry in the account that matters more.

Guarding time more jealously than money does not have to mean optimising it. What I take from it is that I should notice its going: which hours I gave on purpose, which were taken with my consent, and which went missing. The third category is the only shameful one. An evening spent on a slow film with Jonas was given. An evening lost to forty browser tabs just went.

It is also why the sabbatical is not really a question about money. The fund is a way of buying back a block of time before I am too tired to want it.

Where it breaks down: taken strictly, this turns every hour into a decision and every rest into an entry that has to be justified. Seneca himself is hard on people who are forever busy, and a person auditing her minutes is as busy as anyone. 💎 Evenings are the only hours nobody is paying for is this claim made local. 💎 There will always be more to do than a life can hold is its limit.

🌍WHY IT MATTERS

I ask one question at the weekly review: which hours went missing? I am not asking which were wasted. The answer is nearly always the same ninety minutes after dinner, and knowing that has done more than any plan to fix it.

Still open.

  • What would a ten-minute time check on Sundays look like, next to the money one?
  • Is time given to Halden lost? Seneca would say so, and I think he is wrong.
  • How many Christmases in Averley is a number I can stand to write down?

☑️NEXT STEPS

  • Add the missing-hours question to the Sunday review
  • Read letter 1 again on the first Sunday of the sabbatical
🧭 COMPASS
⬆️ North (Upstream)

📖 Seneca on time as the only possession: the first letter, and the idea of holding on to one's own hours. 📖 Seneca on the shortness of life: a life is long enough if it is not handed out piecemeal.

⬅️ West (Similar)

💎 Evenings are the only hours nobody is paying for: the evening is where this stops being philosophy. 💎 There will always be more to do than a life can hold: more time would not fix it, since the list grows to fill whatever I have.

🎯 Center (Mechanism)

Every other resource has an inflow that can replace an outflow. Time has only outflow, at a fixed rate. Because the loss is silent and continuous it goes unrecorded, and what is unrecorded gets given away to whoever asks first.

➡️ East (Opposite)

Time given to other people is not lost in the way he implies. The Wednesday calls with Mum would sit in his ledger as hours handed over. They are the part of the week I would keep if I could keep only one.

⬇️ South (Downstream)

As a working rule, ⚓ Time is the only thing I own. As something to sit with, 🏔️ On counting the visits left. As a decision, taken on 28 December with the Köln Concert on, 📜 Take the sabbatical from September 2026.
