🎯CORE THESIS
The container did not change the world by being a clever box. It changed the world when everything around the box was made to fit it: ships, cranes, lorries, rail wagons, port layouts, labour agreements, and after a long fight the dimensions and corner fittings themselves. Once the whole chain was standard, the cost of moving goods fell so far that distance stopped being a reason to make things nearby. The winners and the losers were mostly decided by who rebuilt around the box first.
⚡QUICK JOTS
- Bought as holiday reading, started on 12 May, the first day of the new structure at work, and carried to Lisbon in hand luggage. See ✈️ Lisbon and Sintra in May.
- On Monday 19 May I read the chapter on the first voyage on a bench in Cacilhas, facing an actual container terminal across the water. Jonas photographed me doing it and said nothing, loudly. That day is 2025-05-19-Monday.
- Finished in the air on the 24th, somewhere over the Bay of Biscay.
- It turned out to be about my job. 🏢 Halden Freight Systems exists because a steel box made freight cheap enough for the paperwork to become the expensive part.
- A favourite. The best book about a boring object I have read, and I say that as someone who named her cat Pallet.
- The just-in-time chapter is where 🧩 Pull systems meets the sea, and it sent me to 🏛️ Taiichi Ohno in October. No lines copied from a book in copyright; the one I keep beside it is Marcus on change, 💬 The universe is transformation life is, which is a fair summary of what happened to every old port in the story.
- What the box could not absorb is what my product lives on, and how much of that one person can handle in a shift is 🧩 Exception budget.
