🎯CORE THESIS

There are two ways of using a day. Managers cut it into hours and can always fit one more meeting in. Makers need half a day at least to do anything hard, so for them a single meeting is not an hour lost but an afternoon broken in two, and the dread of it damages the morning as well. Trouble starts when the first kind of person schedules the second without knowing the difference.

⚡QUICK JOTS

  • Re-read every January, the way other people re-read their resolutions. This year on Friday the 17th, before the dinner club.
  • It takes eight minutes. Each year I agree with all of it and change nothing. This year I changed the calendar the same afternoon.
  • Written by a programmer about programmers and investors. It transfers to a product manager almost too well, because I am both people in the essay on different days of the same week.
  • The essay has no advice for the person whose manager owns the calendar. That part I had to work out with Dov.
  • The essay is the modern end of an old shelf about who owns the hours. 🏛️ Arnold Bennett wrote the 1908 version for clerks, 💬 You wake up in the morning, and lo, and 🏛️ Marcus Aurelius the version for people who would sooner stay in bed, 💬 In the morning when thou risest. Those are the two quotes filed here. Graham himself is paraphrased.
