Exception, in freight
🔤DEFINITION AND ORIGIN
A shipment event that departs from the plan: late, damaged, held, mis-routed, short, refused. Everything that goes as booked is silent. An exception is the part of the day that needs a person.
Halden Flow recognises 23 types; the table is in Halden Flow exception codes.
Origin: Latin exceptio, from excipere, to take out: ex (out) and capere (to take). The thing taken out of the rule.
The working belief behind the product is 💎 An exception is information about the process and not a nuisance in it.
An example from my work. In 📂 Exceptions Inbox general availability the word had to mean one thing to engineers, dispatchers and Sales. It did not.
- To a dispatcher it is a phone call they are about to have to make.
- To an engineer it is an event with a code.
- To a customer it is where is my container.
I wrote this definition on 8 January so that the spec and the reference table would at least agree with each other.
