📖SYNOPSIS

Twelve jurors are shut in a room on the hottest day of the year to decide a murder case that looks settled. The first vote is eleven to one. The one does not say the boy is innocent. He says he is not sure, and asks whether they could talk about it for an hour.

📝MY TAKE

Saturday evening, the day after the answer on 📂 Promotion case for Group Product Manager: not this cycle. I had spent the afternoon writing down whether to stay. Jonas chose the film from the box of old discs without explaining, which was the explanation.

A strange thing to watch the day after a committee decided something about me in a room I was not in. I expected to side with the accused. I spent ninety-six minutes studying juror 8 instead, as a technician.

What he actually does, written down because I want to be able to do it:

  1. He asks for time, not agreement. One hour. A request so small that refusing it looks worse than granting it.
  2. He never says they are wrong. He says he does not know, and makes not knowing respectable.
  3. He goes after one fact at a time. The knife. The train. The old man's walk to the door. Never the whole case.
  4. He lets the loudest man run out of road and does not finish the job for him.
  5. He risks the secret ballot. If nobody joins him, he will fold. Somebody joins him.

That is the syllabus for ♦️ Hard conversations, and I added it there. It is also, uncomfortably, the opposite of my February, when I was right about the launch and said so in a way that cost me the room.

The craft

One room, almost no music. The camera starts above the men and ends below them, and the walls seem to come closer as the afternoon goes on. I did not notice it happening, only that I was sweating in November.

The thought I went to bed with: a committee is a room of people who would like to go home. Next year's case should make it easy for one of them to ask for an hour.

🎞️BEST MOMENTS

  • The first vote: eleven hands, and one man looking at the table.
  • The second knife. The best prop reveal I know.
  • The old man's walk, paced out across the jury room with a watch.
  • The last hold-out, and a photograph torn in half.
